2022 could boldly be called the Year of Marek Pospieszalski, what was confirmed by the opinions of critics and the results of industry summaries. And the two excellent albums that were behind this success.

The album “Polish Composers Of The 20th Century” was unanimously hailed as the jazz album of the year in Poland.  And just last year, this project lived to see its continuation in the form of a concert performance during Krakow’s Sacrum Profanum festival, a programme dedicated this time to Polish female composers.

The hour-long (with a light cover) album featured ten tracks. The leader, playing alto and tenor saxophones and clarinet, was accompanied by the band known from last year’s album mentioned in the introduction: Piotr Chęcki – tenor and baritone saxophones, Tomasz Dąbrowski – trumpet, Tomasz Sroczyński – viola, Szymon Mika – guitars: electric and acoustic, Grzegorz Tarwid – piano, Max Mucha – double bass and Qba Janicki – drums and soundboard.

The basis for the improvisations were works by Elżbieta Sikora, Bernadetta Matuszczak, Grażyna Bacewicz, Barbara Buczek, Hanna Kulenty, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, Grażyna Pstrokońska-Nawratil, Marta Ptaszyńska and Agata Zubel. And also Lucia Dlugoszewski, one of whose works inspired a composition by Marek Pospieszalski.

Similarly to the album from a year ago, which has already been mentioned here, the songs are variations inspired by or (mostly) derived from original compositions. This is intense, dense music. Extremely complex – each successive encounter reveals successive layers of individual parts.

There is no fooling oneself that this is easy music. But the genre weight of the album corresponds one hundred per cent to its extraordinary artistic value. Confirming the reputation of the leader, the musicians involved and the publisher.
