Youth and experience. Jazz and poetry. Diverse musical traditions and inspirations. Three countries. A new band. These elements are combined in the latest release from Budapest-based label BMC Records.

The Hungarian publisher has been known for years for promoting interesting, unobvious and daring projects. This time, it presented listeners with a new trio led by the outstanding French cellist Vincent Courtois. He has invited Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius, known from renowned Colin Vallon Trio and the rising star of the European scene, Dutch singer Sanne Rambags, who has already received critical acclaim for her work with Under the Surface and Mudita.

It is with Sanne Rambags’ name that a significant proportion of the compositions on the album ‘Twigs’ are signed.  And almost half were hatched from the collaborative efforts of the entire trio. The singer also wrote the words to three tracks. In five others, however, we will hear lines from classics of world literature: Emily Brontë, Pablo Neruda, Federico García Lorca and Emily Dickinson.

And it is the poetry that dominates the mood of the entire album. Intimate, delicate, lyrical. Every last piece of the artistic puzzle played perfectly here. An excellent choice of texts and linking them to the music. Sensational collaboration between the artists. The richness of the cello sounds, the subtlety of the percussion playing.

Above all, however, it is the display of Sanne Rambags’ vocal abilities that impresses. “I Am Free”, full of multithreaded meanings and references, is magnificent. Beautiful “Between the Bliss” where poignant singing intertwines with penetrating, acute vocals.   “Twigs “is a display of maturity and mastery. An excellent album.
